Week 8 Reading : The Economies of Elegance Migrating Coastlines : Residential Tower, Dubai

Ali Rahim, H. J. (2007). “The Economies of Elegance Migrating Coastlines: Residential Tower, Dubai.” 77(1): 66-75.

This paper discuss about the Residential Tower in Dubai, designed by Ali Rahim and Hina Jamelle. This digital architecture represents not only merely a technique for producing forms using computer software, but a particular visual taste. The building is designed based on the transformation of four tubes and at same time it integrates all of the mechanical and electrical systems.

This dynamic tower looks as in everything morphs into everything else : floors, walls, columns, beams, structure, furniture. The main reason to have the building twisted is to alter the load-bearing capacity of each floor. Even the windows are clad in heat-sensitive low iron glass to preform different qualities depending on the location of the sun.

The residential tower may influence the design of builder especially in building tall condominium by suggesting selling real estate in terms of quality of space rather the the just the square footage. This is mainly because the units in this residential have varies square footage and the price of the unit are based mainly on the potentials of that particular unit.
